The Periodontal Surgical Assistant at Madan Periodontics plays a key role in supporting the periodontist during all phases of patient care — from consultations and surgical procedures to post-operative care and maintenance. This position requires exceptional clinical skill, professionalism, and patient-centered communication. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and maintains a calm, compassionate presence with patients undergoing complex periodontal treatment.
Assist the periodontist during all surgical and non-surgical periodontal and implant procedures.
Prepare and maintain surgical setups, including instrumentation, materials, and sterile fields.
Take and process digital radiographs, CBCT scans, intraoral photos, and diagnostic impressions.
Provide chairside assistance during local anesthesia administration, flap procedures, bone grafts, implant placement, crown lengthening, extractions, and tissue grafting.
Manage surgical documentation, consent forms, and treatment notes accurately.
Ensure all instruments are sterilized and properly maintained according to infection control protocols.
Monitor patient comfort and safety throughout all procedures.
Provide thorough pre-operative and post-operative instructions and ensure patient understanding.
Demonstrate empathy and professionalism when communicating with patients about treatment expectations and recovery.
Assist with patient follow-ups, healing checks, and documentation of progress.
Support patient education regarding oral hygiene, maintenance therapy, and long-term periodontal health.
Maintain accurate clinical records in the practice management system (Dentrix Ascend / relevant software).
Ensure all surgical rooms are fully stocked, organized, and ready for use.
Collaborate closely with front office and sterilization teams to maintain efficient daily flow.
Required: Dental Assistant certification or equivalent on-the-job experience in a surgical or periodontal setting.
Preferred: CDA or RDA license in Virginia; CPR/BLS certification.
Minimum 2 years of dental assisting experience (periodontics or oral surgery preferred).
Knowledge of sterile field protocol, OSHA standards, and HIPAA compliance.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a patient-first mindset.
Comfort with digital technology (intraoral scanners, radiography software, and EMR systems).
High attention to detail and ability to multitask under pressure.
